Just a bit of This and That

I think it is Spring here in Florida!  Things are blooming, trees budding out, more birds singing in the morning, and I'm sneezing!   And my eyes are itching!   This happens to me every year about this time here.  The beautiful old live oak trees and water oaks are beginning to 'do their thing' again.  They seem to be the only thing on earth, so far, that I have an allergy to.  I take my little allergy pill each morning and I can keep things under control for the most part... so far anyway!  With each sneeze I think it is time to start packing up for the migration back to VT.  I packed up some things today that I won't be needing until we get home.  It shouldn't be until the end of March that we actually head up the road toward home.  We have accomplished a lot here this year, and had a lot of good times with our snowbird friends.

I am having a great time learning sign language.  Frank and Cindy are a couple who live here and are teaching us American Sign Language.  Our last class was such fun.  It was our seventh session and after a time of review we simply sat around and 'chatted' with our hands and fingers flying and our over taxed brains sizzling as we tried to remember as much as we could to get our thoughts across to one another.

Dennis has been painting our place, outside, and putting on some shutters.  Things are looking really nice and fresh.  He has been working on re-siding several places here in Sunshine Village.  Cousin Natalie and Jerry have new siding and windows on their place, looks great and Monday they start on yet another make-over.  We will all look so good, I hope it doesn't make the rent go up!

This week we were treated to a demonstration of clogging by a great group of cloggers from near here.  They came to us at our Sunshine Hall and Wow, can they move!  Never missing a beat and always staying together in all their steps, such precision!  And they aren't 20 year olds either!!  They weren't even out of breath and puffing with all that exertion!

We are all decked out for the next holiday which will be St. Patrick's Day.  Our clever decorators have our 'Seasonal Tree' all cloaked in GREEN !  I guess I will still wear a bit of Orange as my people came from Northern Ireland, were Protestant and were 'Orangemen' according to family history.  Hope nobody thinks these are fighting colors!   A cousin of mine always wore her Orange on the day of "The Wearing of The Green!  I don't think she ever got into any altercations!

Some pictures for you!

And I leave you with a quote or a little snippet of poetry that I like a lot.

Snow Angels and a Time Machine

A Fancy Snow Angel

I awoke early this morning., even before the birds began their morning praise songs.  I thought of the reports of snow in some of the southern states yesterday and how VT has, so far, not had any big snowfalls this season.  Thinking of snow reminded me of how we used to get lots of snow when I was in grade school.  Funny how one thought leads to another and yet another!  Soon I boarded my time machine and was off to the days of yore!

I traveled back to a wintery day when I was in 4th grade in the small, brick, two room schoolhouse in a little Vermont village.  As I stepped out of my time machine into a white wonderland of fresh fallen snow, in my woolen snow pants, tall boots, knitted toque, mittens and scarf, I spotted my best friend, Madelyn's bright mittened hand beckoning me to join her.  It was recess and we headed to the little hill in back of the schoolhouse.  Other girls from our class were there too.  We had a plan to make snow angels against the hill.  If only we could keep the boys from messing up the pure undisturbed snow long enough for us to make our angels.  They decided to leave us to our 'dumb game' and go have a snowball fight somewhere else, so we got in a line, a good arm's length apart.  We plopped down and laid back in the snow.  Slowly we brought our straight arms up from our sides, up and up, all the way to our heads and back down again.  Nice wings!  Our legs went out a ways at the same time to make our angel's skirt.  The sky from here is so pretty, a deep cerulean blue, no clouds!  Then we sat up carefully and were given a tug to our feet by a friend.   We jumped away from the angel so as not to mess her up.  Standing back they looked so fine all in a line!  Then the bell rang...recess over!  Mad dash for the schoolhouse!

Our school had two rooms and a generous hallway in between.  There were 3 grades to a room...1-3 in one room, the little room....4-6 in the other,  the 'big room'.  We all rushed into the nice, warm building.  I can still smell that schoolhouse smell of books and papers and the wonderful warmth upon coming in from a cold winter day.

It took awhile to get out of our wet winter gear.  (No nylon back then, that the snow didn't cling to! )
Our wool ski pants were just covered!  Hats, scarves and mostly our mittens looked as if the snow fairy had embellished them with tiny white pearls!  We race for the radiators located around the room and toss our wet, pearly mittens on them, hearing the hiss as they plop down, and smelling the wool as it gets hot.
Our teacher and the older kids helped get the snow pants hung up to dry.

Then Mrs. Hammond would sit down at the old piano that someone had painted a sea foam green and begin to play some marching music.  Our fingers and toes tingling, our cheeks flaming and our hair standing on end from yanking off the toques, we marched in time to the music around the rows of desks, up one aisle and down the next, around the back and to the front.  Toes warmer now, we take our seats.
Teacher continues to play as we settle down.  We request our favorite, The Black Hawk Waltz.  All is quiet now as we listen and watch her hands fly over the keys of the old piano.  We want more, so she plays it through one more time.  It calms our exuberant spirits and we are ready to begin our book learning.  We have learned so much already!  Helping one another, music appreciation and how to be respectful and orderly.

So now the 6th grade is instructed to read quietly from Prose and Poetry, the 5th grade to study their Spelling words and the 4th grade will have it's Geography class.  We read today of a barefoot boy named Bunga The Jungle Boy, who's skin is black, who lives somewhere in Africa where there is no snow and who has yams for dinner!

I go to sharpen my pencil and look out the window.  The sun makes the snow sparkle, and the angels, all in a row, lie peacefully against the hill .

Now the birds begin to sing in real time... I must have returned to the present... Sixty years later.  I still smell those hot woolen mittens hissing on the radiators!

Have a pleasant day... hop in your time machine and see where it takes you!

Snow Angels in the making!

On the Go Again

Our cold spell has passed and we are enjoying sunny, warm weather once again.  Yesterday was another great day with the girls.  We had planned another trip, this time to Tarpon Springs, which is about an hour and a half south and west of here.  There were five of us on this trip.

These are sponges shaped like baskets. Makes a great flower pot holder!

We sure had fun browsing in the shops along the pier!  We watched a video in one shop explaining the different sponges and their uses and the different parts of the world where they grow. The shopkeepers were so friendly and such a happy lot.  It is a Greek community teeming with wonderful Greek restaurants and bakeries.  Delightful aromas abound!  After lots of thought, we settled on Mykonos for our lunch.  It was GREAT!   We all ordered something different and did a bit of sharing.  I had some wonderful shrimp, in garlic and herb butter and we all had these super good Greek potatoes.  We asked how they prepared them and were told they were peeled and baked in olive oil and lemon juice!   Super good!  Others tried 2 different eggplant dishes and a gyro. All came with Greek salads.

After lunch, we did more wandering and window shopping all the bakeries.  We finally succumbed to the tantalizing sights and scents wafting from these quaint little shops.  Being too sated to eat any more,
we bought some goodies to take home.   Baklava was the choice of most of us.  Later, at home it proved to be the right choice... so honey-sweet, nutty and with a great filo dough.  So much for the diets today!

I was reading my friend Cyndy's blog today and found it ironic that she was writing today about how we need to spend time with other women friends.  How true this is.  We need to help, build up, laugh and share our lives with other like creatures.  We find we really enjoy our little day trips together and can relate to the same likes and experiences.

So grab a friend, or two, or more.  Take a little jaunt or just put on the teapot and call them over for a chat and a laugh or two.  You'll be blessed and they will too.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY !

Wow!  Has it been that long?  Time sure flies when you are having fun!  We have been so blessed to have company come to visit us here in our winter quarters.    First, cousin Janice was here for 4 days and we were 'sharing' her with her sister Natalie.  Since we have the extra bedroom we got to keep her for the nights and sometimes awhile in the daytime.  She had a great trip, first here then to Boston and on to VT to go skiing with her grandkids.  Then the day she left, our wonderful daughter, Angel and her hubby Paul, the world's greatest son in-law came for a four day stay with us.  We had a really nice relaxing time together.  Then all of a sudden everyone is gone and I am missing them already!
We celebrated Angel and Dennis' birthdays while the kids were here.  The weather was pretty nice for the first few days and then we had a very cold, windy day with temps not getting over 50* and the TV even had wind chill factors out there!  It got down to 28* the next morning.  We all had our plants covered once again and there was ice on the birdbath!  But the wonderful thing about these cold mornings is that they don't last!  By noontime it is up to 70* most times.   Today is a really nice blue sky day with 78* at noontime.  Shuffleboard and bean bag games scheduled for this afternoon.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S Day to you all !
Tonight we are having a dinner/dance at Sunshine Hall.  Our great decoration committee has things all decorated up for the special day.  We have a "Holiday Tree" that is all decked out for Valentine's Day. The story of how we came to have a Holiday Tree is a short one. Someone said, " necessity is the mother of invention"... well it was necessary that we find a good storage place for our Christmas tree after Christmas. It is a big one and posed a problem as we didn't readily have a good big place to accommodate it for the rest of the year, so our talented decoration committee came up with the idea of using it for all seasons and occasions !   Here it is in all it's glory as a Sweetheart Tree!

A quote for Valentine's Day day.  This one is by Rupert Brook.

Blessings

I want to share today thoughts on a great subject...Blessings!   Awhile ago I heard a wonderful song by Laura Story with the title "Blessings".  I bought the song and have played it so many times since.  We ordered the music at church back home in VT  and our little choir sang it for a Sunday morning anthem.
The words have a powerful message and Laura sings it so well.   If you'd like to hear it you can go to Google and type in ... Laura Story "Blessings" youtube ... and just click on the version with the heart surrounding the words 'Love never fails' from God's Word.

I am trying to be more thankful... for all the little things.  Each day is full of these little wonders.  I just have to think to look for them.  I have had a cold and fever for a couple days, Dennis shared it with me, and I've tried to find the good in this situation!  Amazing how many things to be thankful for here!   Friends who call or inquire for me, a nice quiet place to rest and recuperate, cousin Natalie who brought me cough drops, my hubby who made supper, a good book to read just when I was laying low, some good songs to listen to as I accompany them with my honking and sneezing, and how fortunate I was to be able to sleep at night after taking Tylenol which I am able to have on hand, and on and on.  Maybe the best thing is that I will be nearly recovered and surely past the 'sharing' stage by Sunday when we expect company!!

I am feeling so much better today and can even make it to my American Sign Language Class later today. We are being taught by a very sweet and patient couple who moved here and joined our Sunshine family this fall.  There are about a dozen of us and we are doing pretty well with our signing.  I really didn't want to miss a class.
Before getting this cold, I went with 4 friends to the annual Kumquat Festival in Dade City, about a half hour from here.  We had a grad time wandering among the booths of arts and crafts and 'all things kumquat'.  The kumquat pie was the big treat of the day.  We all bought a basket of kumquats and came home with the recipe.  Delightful pie!    If you see any up north in the supermarket, give this recipe a try!

Really yummy!!

I also want to recommend a blog that I follow, written by my friend Cyndy who is a wonderful writer.
... Musings On The Hill.     http://www.darlinghill.blogspot.com   Her blog is so uplifting as she talks of her faith and of her life in a remote and lovely place in the hills of VT.  Lately she speaks of answered prayer, miracles, and the wonders of nature.  Oh yeah, she is a great photographer too! In summer we love to spend time with her and Syd on The Hill.  She invites you to 'visit the hill' through her blog.

I am about to make some soup for lunch.  Then a rest and off to class.  I leave you today with a Bible verse;  I Thessalonians 5:18   "In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."      Blessings!
